A Taste Of Salerno

Day Trip, Group Tour

Offer Image
Picturesque Salerno, the second city of Campania, famous for having been home to the Allied landing in 1943, is a splendid gateway to southern Italy. Full of shops, the typical markets in the historical center make it the ideal environment for shopping and gastronomy.

Salerno is known for a delicious, wide selection of street food that you may find baked, fried, grilled or even frozen. These delectable treats are often "hand-held" and are available at a variety of shops or along the streets and made from fresh ingredients. Thanks to its strategic position halfway between Naples, Amalfi Coast and Cilento Park, Salerno is the place where you can taste many gastronomic specialties of the region.

In 194 BC. Salerno was a Roman colony and was named Salernum. The city made progress and enriched its culture and its traditions during the occupations by the Goths, Byzantines, Longobards and Normans. Salerno is built on the ruins of a Roman temple, Salerno Cathedral. It has Byzantine bronze doors, a baroque crypt and a marble altar. The terraced Minerva's Garden has been growing medicinal plants since the 14th century.

Salerno derives from "Salum", which means sea, and from the sea you will be delighted with the beautiful buildings and the elegant promenade. After approximately a 10-15-minute walk you will arrive to the historic center and begin your delicious day of discovery.

The city is full of charm and history and you can find many of the famous gastronomic products of the region strategically located in the historic center. Your walking tour takes you through the picturesque streets of the old town, where there are many antique shops.

Here, in the typical delicatessens, you can taste the famous buffalo mozzarella, cold cuts and cheeses. The fertile area around Salerno allows for rich farmland and the easy access to the port makes for daily fresh seafood. Cheeses, including the buffalo mozzarella, are all produced today in the traditional way from centuries past.

Next up, try the local pizza, an excellent street food with thousands of variations. Pizza and pasta, cooked from the local wheat, make the region's recipes famous throughout the world. Genuine pizza, the most famous hand-held food, is usually either a marinara, topped with tomato, garlic and oil, or margherita with tomato, basil and mozzarella.

For those who love fish, the typical "cuoppo", friend food, is served in a paper wrapping. The typical "colatura di alici" (anchovies liquid) is produced in a nearby village on the Amalfi Coast. The area is known for many fish-based dishes, for example, spaghetti with clam sauce, fish soup, fried anchovies, swordfish rolls, octopus cooked with San Marzano tomatoes, and Mussels Impepate.

Your walk will continue with a stop at the beautiful Cathedral of St. Matthew, free time will be given here so you may admire the spectacular monument and take photos.

Continue along the historic center with a stop at a famous pastry shop to taste the wonderful sfogliatella, pride of Naples. A sfogliatella, sometimes called a lobster tail in English, is a shell-shaped filled Italian pastry native to Campania. Sfogliatella means "small, thin leaf/layer", as the pastry's texture resembles stacked leaves.

Move on to the main street of the city to find retail stores and bars. Not to be missed is the coffee or a tasting of limoncello. Amalfi lemons are used to make the famous limoncello liqueur and to prepare gelato, sweets and desserts. A different and typical liqueur of the area is made from the fennel plant.

Your walk will begin to come to an end as you stroll along the scenic seafront, where sometimes there are typical markets, before you return to the meeting point near the cruise ship pier area.

Please Note: The cost of tastings is approximately 18 EURO per person and it is suitable for vegetarians as well. As an alternative to tasting the "anchovy colatura" you can taste other specialties such as the typical crocche or rice oranges. The tastings of all the suggested specialties can be managed according to the guests needs and tastes, your guide will always be present to illustrate the products and advise guests concerning the tastings.
